All the functions of the JFC are operated by participating members and with funding raised by them individually. The present activities of the JFC include:
The JFC celebrated its 35th year with the publication of more than 600 works composed by its members in 2008. Since 1979 the publication of symphonic works has enriched the JFC Catalogue and has received special support from the Suntory Music Foundation. The JFC Catalogue is annually delivered internationally to major musical organizations, thereby helping in the global diffusion of Japanese music. The JFC Catalogue is available upon request.
The JFC annual concert, “Japanese Composers”, started in 1974 as an introduction to the JFC Catalogue. It has been a two-day concert since 1980. Other annual concerts are Kids Box Piano Concert “To Our Children”, begun in 1985, in which composers play their own pieces, and “JFC Independent” which started in 1996. In 2001, the JFC started “JFC Awards Competition Concert”, which is open to all Japanese composers younger than 35 writing for chamber orchestra. It is held every other year.
The new project, “International Exchange Concerts” , in collaboration with ACL Korea ,has occurred since 2002.
In 2005 and 2006, the JFC participated in exchange concerts with Singaporean composers in both Singapore and Tokyo.
Each year, the JFC releases one CD. The selections are from the JFC Catalogue (1980~).
THE LIST OF ALL JAPANESE COMPOSERS’ WORKS
The JFC is engaged in editing “Works by Japanese Composers”, which is published by the Suntory Music Foundation. This list covers all of the works composed by Japanese composers including non-JFC members. Already available are publication of 1980-2006.
The ADVOCATION FOR THE COMPOSERS’ RIGHT
Periodical negotiations have been held between the JFC and major broadcasting, recording and film firms in Japan, ensuring that composers are properly credited and paid for the use of their compositions.
The JFC, as an organization, belongs to the Performing Artist Health Insurance Association, Tokyo Metropolitan Branch, which in many respects offers more advantageous services than the national health insurance. Any JFC member living in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, or Saitama can become a member of it.The JFC@also belongs to the National Health Insurance Union of Artists.
THE ASIAN COMPOSERS’ LEAGUE (ACL) & INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR COMTEMPORARY MUSIC (ISCM)
As the member of the ACL, a principal activity of the JFC is its promotion of works by composers working throughout Asia. The expression of this solidarity has been particularly felt in 1974, 1990, 2000, and 2003, when the JFC hosted the ACL Conference and Festival. The JFC has been an associate member of the ISCM since 1993.
